Text spilling out of a floated division

I'm currently working on a fluid layout design, but I've encountered an issue with the left menu text overflowing. I can't seem to get overflow:hidden to work properly.

You'll notice that in the blue area, I have highlighted the text that should be contained within the left menu div. Unfortunately, it overflows and disrupts the rest of the site layout.

For a demonstration, please visit the following JS Bin link: http://jsbin.com/OcoJEpe/2/edit?html,css,output

Thank you for any assistance you are able to provide.

Sincerely, James.

Answer №1

The issue with overflow:hidden; not functioning properly is attributed to the left-menu div expanding based on the text size. Without any CSS or HTML constraints in place, the height of your left-menu remains unchecked. To resolve this issue, you must impose a specific height limit for the div.

Answer №2

The height of the element is set to its default value of auto, allowing it to adjust based on its content.

To control the height, you must define a specific value:

#sidebar{height:300px;} //OR SET A FIXED HEIGHT

Answer №3

Take a look at this practical demo, simply include a height property for the paragraph and configure the overflow:hidden style.

Displayed below is the HTML code snippet:

<p id="height"><span>This content exceeds the boundaries of its parent container...</span>
          Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Suspendisse a odio ac nulla aliquet molestie. Cras aliquet metus eget vehicula vulputate. Donec eget nisl sit amet quam fringilla molestie. Vivamus elementum non justo quis consequat. Etiam quis quam eu nisi cursus aliquet eu et arcu.
    </p>

Here is the corresponding CSS:

p#height{
      height:30px;
      background:red;
      overflow:hidden;
    }
