Struggling to create horizontal buttons for my design

Does anyone have any suggestions for fixing my navigation bar? I attempted to create it myself, but I'm struggling to make everything function properly.

Below are the images of the button in all three states:

The red background color is coded as #490000 and should be contained within a separate div.

The text on top of the buttons is using a custom font, although that detail isn't crucial in this particular case.
