This isn't actually a traditional <select>
or <button>
element. Instead, the original form element has been replaced with a stylized <ul>
(among other possibilities). JavaScript is then utilized to hide the select element, substitute it with a list, and assign functions to list items or anchors.
Update: Gmail reportedly utilizes divs rather than lists. The logic remains consistent in this scenario as well.
