Link embedded within a list item

How can I make the hyperlink element fill up the width and height of the li element inside?

<ul>
    <li><a href="#" style="display: block; width: 100%; height: 100%;">this link to fill up the li element width and height</a><li>
</ul>

Answer №1

div {display: block; width: 100%;}

Here is the solution you need.

Answer №2

A solution is to add display:block;width:100% to the element's CSS.

For example:

HTML

<ul>
  <li><a href='#'>Link 1</a></li>
  <li><a href='#'>Link 2</a></li>
  <li><a href='#'>Link 3</a></li>
</ul>

CSS (using selectors - a little trickier but interesting)

ul>li>a {
  display:block;
  width:100%;
}

The <a> tag is an inline element, which means it cannot have its width styled (and some other properties as well). Therefore, changing the display property to block is necessary.

Answer №3

Of course

li a {width:100%; display:block;}
