Is there a glitch with child margins in a relative-absolute positioning setup?

Could someone shed some light on how I can prevent the margin from one sibling div affecting another? The browser's layout seems a bit baffling to me in this scenario.

I'm attempting to position the yellow box relative to its parent, but the presence of a margin-top on the blue box is interfering with the positioning of the yellow one.

Here is the link to the code snippet

section{
    position: relative;
}

div.options{
    position: absolute;
    left: 10px;
    top: 10px;
    display: inline-block;
    background: #ff0;
    padding: 50px;
}

div.content{
    height: 100px;
    width: 100%;
    background: #09c;
    margin-top: 50px;
}
<article>
    <section>
        <div class='options'>

        </div>
        <div class='content'>
            <h1>hello world</h1>
        </div>
    </section>
</article>

Answer №1

Known as margin collapse.

8.3.1 Margin Collapse

In CSS, when the margins of two or more boxes combine to form a single margin, it is referred to as margin collapse.

To avoid this issue, adjust the overflow property of the parent element from the default value to something like auto or hidden.

(For more solutions, refer to the link provided above.)

Updated Example

section {
    position: relative;
    overflow: auto;
}

Changing the overflow property creates a new block formatting context.

9.4.1 Block Formatting Contexts

Various elements establish new block formatting contexts for their contents, such as floats, absolutely positioned elements, and those with specific 'overflow' values.

Boxes in a block formatting context are laid out vertically, with vertical margins collapsing between adjacent blocks.
