Is it acceptable to replicate another individual's WordPress theme and website design in order to create my own WordPress website that looks identical to theirs?

It may sound shady, but a friend of mine boasts about the security of his WordPress website, claiming it's impossible to copy someone else's layout or theme. However, my limited experience in web development tells me otherwise. I believe it is possible to replicate a WordPress layout/theme and use it for your own site.

This friend has actually challenged me to do just that - copy his theme and create my own website on WordPress. He has given me permission to proceed with this challenge.

My question is, is it truly possible to accomplish this task? And if so, how would one go about doing it?

I've attempted to find some WP Plugins to help with this, but have had no success so far.

In addition, I tried using the Figma plugin "HTML to Figma by Builder.io", but when I imported the .json file, it was a mess and not usable at all.

Answer №1

Feel free to take inspiration from the HTML and theme style, but remember that the PHP code is off limits. If you want to recreate the front-end, consider building a brand new WordPress theme from scratch. Unfortunately, there is no magic solution to automatically replicate everything.

If your friend has a custom PHP filter that alters WordPress functionality, duplicating it may be impossible. However, focusing solely on recreating the visual interface is achievable with some effort.

To put it simply, don't hold out for a quick fix or automated tool to do the job for you.

Answer №2

To access the code, simply use CTRL+SHIFT+I to open up inspect and copy the necessary information. Alternatively, you can press CTRL+S to save the code and make any modifications as needed. Remember, for backend modifications, hacking skills may be required.
