How can you create a scenario in Angular Material where items in a toolbar transition to the second line exclusively on mobile screens?

Visit the Angular Material website to see how the toolbar appears on a desktop: https://material.angular.io/

On mobile devices, the menu items Components, CDK, and Guides are displayed on the second line, while github, theme icon, and version number dropdown remain on the first row.

Have you ever wondered how this layout is achieved? The documentation and examples do not provide any insight into this specific feature.

Answer №1

Interestingly, the website features dual navbars. The Components button in the desktop layout differs from that in the mobile design. While the desktop version displays the full navbar, the mobile version hides certain components and reveals a secondary navbar.

To implement this on your own site, you can:

  • create separate navbars for desktop and mobile users
  • display the desktop navbar with all items for desktop users
  • show the mobile navbar with selected items and exclude some from the desktop version for mobile users

Answer №2

To determine if the device is a mobile, you can create a function as follows:

checkIfMobile() {
  return (window.screen.width <= 576)
}

In your HTML code, you can utilize *ngIf to display different templates based on screen size like this:

<div *ngIf="!checkIfMobile(); else largeScreen">
</div>

<ng-template #largeScreen>
</ng-template>

You have the option to create separate templates for both types of screen sizes.
