How can I position one DIV relative to another DIV?

Can a DIV be positioned relative to another DIV? My guess is that it involves nesting it inside the reference DIV and utilizing position: relative. However, I'm struggling with how to achieve this without impacting the content of the reference DIV. Any tips on how to accomplish this correctly?

For reference, please see: http://jsfiddle.net/CDmGQ

Answer №1

To ensure proper placement, start by setting the parent DIV's position to relative (no need to specify offsets like left, top, etc.). Then, apply position: absolute to the child DIV with your desired offset.
This straightforward approach should work effectively.

Answer №2

To achieve the desired layout, make sure to set postion:relative for the outer DIV and position:absolute for the inner div.
Give this a try. You can view the demonstration here

#one
{
    background-color: #EEE;
    margin: 62px 258px;
    padding: 5px;
    width: 200px;
    position: relative;
}

#two
{
    background-color: #F00;
    display: inline-block;
    height: 30px;
    position: absolute;
    width: 100px;
    top:10px;
}

Answer №4

Utilize position:relative; within the #one division and employ position:absolute inside the #two section. View the demonstration here
