Having trouble with your GitHub Pages site displaying properly on desktop but working fine on mobile?

I am facing an issue with my GitHub pages site on a custom domain. It works perfectly fine on mobile, but when I try to access the same URL from desktop, I encounter a DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN error. Any suggestions on why this might be happening? You can find the site here: Site

EDIT: The issue is resolved using this link, which does not contain 'www.' Does this additional information clarify my problem?

Answer №1

It is unlikely to appear on your mobile device as the DNS records do not seem to be returning any results. For more information, you can check it at WhatsMyDNS

Answer №2

Have you confirmed that your DNS server is set up correctly? I performed a search for your domain name and it seems like your CNAME is not directing to GitHub pages. Make sure to add a CNAME record to your domain through the dashboard of your domain registrar. This record should point to the URL of your GitHub pages (e.g. john.github.io/xyz). For more information, you can refer to this resource.

Answer №3

It seems that adding the www. in front of your domain is causing it to not work properly. The reason for this is unclear as there isn't enough information provided. My assumption is that the record may not have been set up correctly. Here is how it should be configured:

@ A 4H 127.0.0.1

(Feel free to adjust the TTL and IP address)

If you missed including the @ symbol in the first field, then the record will apply to both the www subdomain and the root domain. However, if this is not the issue, creating a separate record for the www subdomain might help resolve the problem.

www A 4H 127.0.0.1

Keep in mind that this solution works for both CNAME and A records.

It's possible that the desktop DNS server may not be fetching changes fast enough.

To address this issue, consider changing the DNS server in your desktop's connection settings to Google's public DNS 8.8.8.8. For Windows users, navigate to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings > Right click on the appropriate adapter (such as WiFi) > Select the Internet Protocol Version 4 connection > Click Properties > Choose "Use the following DNS server addresses" > Input 8.8.8.8 as the "Preferred DNS server" > Click OK

As someone new to this area, I encountered a similar problem and sought help here. The solution for me was simply unplugging the ethernet cable and switching to wifi on my laptop, which resolved the issue.
