Fixed width div displaying too large on iPad screens

Seeking to enhance the performance of a specific webpage on iPad, I have conducted a test. To view the test-page, please click on this link:

The page includes a black box with a width set at 800px. However, upon viewing it on my iPad and taking a screenshot, I observed that the box actually exceeds 800px in width, measuring around 837px. You can see the screenshot here:

I am puzzled by this discrepancy - any insights on why this might be occurring?

Answer №1

No matter how wide your website and its elements are, iOS devices will attempt to resize your content for the best viewing experience.

Prevent this automatic scaling by adding the following code to your HTML header:

<meta name="viewport" content="initial-scale=1.0;">

Answer №2

Make sure to inspect the <meta> tag located above the <title> tag to set the maximum and minimum width parameters.

You can implement this code:

<link media="only screen and (max-device-width: 480px)" href="small-device.css" type= "text/css" rel="stylesheet">

<link media="screen and (min-device-width: 481px)" href="not-small-device.css" type="text/css" rel="stylesheet">
