Exploring Webpack: Unveiling the Contrasts Between Production and Development CSS Bundles

Can you explain the differences in CSS between production and development when compiling with webpack?

I've noticed that the production stylesheet seems to consider the entire website, whereas the development mode appears to only focus on the specific page being developed.

As a result, some inconsistencies may arise when switching to production mode. Are there any other important differences to be aware of?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Answer №1

Each environment has its own unique differences based on the specific configuration that is enabled in the codebase. This includes plugins, loaders, devtools, and more.

webpack --mode=development

Sets process.env.NODE_ENV to development in the DefinePlugin. It also activates NamedChunksPlugin and NamedModulesPlugin.

webpack --mode=production

Sets process.env.NODE_ENV to production in the DefinePlugin. Additionally, it enables FlagDependencyUsagePlugin, FlagIncludedChunksPlugin, ModuleConcatenationPlugin, NoEmitOnErrorsPlugin, OccurrenceOrderPlugin, SideEffectsFlagPlugin, and TerserPlugin.
