Exploring the latest features in Bootstrap 4 Alpha and enhancing your

Rumors have it that Bootstrap 4 will make its debut during the year 2016.

When duty calls for an upgrade, is a complete re-write truly the best solution? Tackling such a project from Boostrap 2 to 3 was no small feat, and I find myself hesitant to take on such a challenge once more for version 4....

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Answer №1

Although Bootstrap 4 is currently in its early alpha stage and has some key features missing, it continues to evolve with each new release. This constant evolution can make maintaining the framework a challenging task.

If you prefer stability, you can still rely on Bootstrap 3, which will receive official support even after the final release of v4:

In the foreseeable future, Bootstrap 3 will be maintained for critical bug fixes and documentation enhancements. The v3 documentation will also remain available after v4’s official launch.

It's important to remember that utilizing alpha or beta code in production environments is not recommended, even if you are eager to explore the latest advancements.

Answer №2

My thoughts align with @eburger's response. If you embark on development now, it's crucial to ensure that you can easily update Bootstrap post your alterations and adjustments. Utilize Bootstrap's Grunt build tool for running the autoprefixer as it is essential.

To streamline your modifications, create Sass partials (one for SCSS and one for custom variables) and import these files into bootstrap.scss within the source code. Consider leveraging bower to keep updated with Bootstrap's code changes. Keep in mind that Bootstrap comes with numerous predefined CSS classes, which might get altered in future releases necessitating updates in your HTML structure accordingly.

Note that using alpha or beta code for production is a strict no-go.

I've personally developed some tools for testing Bootstrap 4; should that be of interest to you:
