Div container placed outside of its parent div

I am struggling to understand why my project-img-text-container is protruding outside its parent div project-image-container and project-img-main. I tried adding project-image-container as a solution, but it didn't work. Both containers are set to relative positioning, so I'm confused about why project-img-text-container is overflowing when it's positioned absolutely.

Any insights on what might be causing this?

#project-img-main {
position: relative;
margin: 0;
width: 100%;
height: auto;
}
#project-image-container {
width: 100%;
height: 100%;
position: relative;
}
#project-img-window {
max-height: 700px;
/*background: rgba(0,0,0,0);*/
width: 100%;
}
#project-img-text-container {
background: rgba(0,0,0,.7);
position: absolute;
width: 33%;
height: 100%;
left: 60%;
z-index: 99;
}
#project-img-text {
color: #FFF;
font-size: 2em;

}
<div id="project-img-main">
<div id="project-image-container"><img src="http://optimumwebdesigns.com/eslich/images/projects/project-main3.jpg" id="project-img-window" alt="Demolition and Wrecking Projects">
<div id="project-img-text-container">
<div id="project-img-text">Test</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>

Answer №1

#gallery-img-text-container {
    top:0;
}

When using position absolute, it's important to define the element's positioning relative to the document or its container.

Answer №2

If you choose not to specify a height, using just position: relative will not contain the element. Since the position property of project-img-text-container is set to absolute, you must include top: 0 in its CSS block.

#project-img-main {
position: relative;
margin: 0;
width: 100%;
height: auto;
}
#project-image-container {
width: 100%;
height: 100%;
position: relative;
}
#project-img-window {
max-height: 700px;
/*background: rgba(0,0,0,0);*/
width: 100%;
}
#project-img-text-container {
background: rgba(0,0,0,.7);
position: absolute;
width: 33%;
height: 100%;
     top: 0; /* Ensure this is set to 0 to bring it to the top */
left: 60%;
z-index: 99;
}
#project-img-text {
color: #FFF;
font-size: 2em;

}
<div id="project-img-main">
<div id="project-image-container"><img src="http://optimumwebdesigns.com/eslich/images/projects/project-main3.jpg" id="project-img-window" alt="Demolition and Wrecking Projects">
<div id="project-img-text-container">
<div id="project-img-text">Test</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
