CSS - Adjusting width based on height ratio

I'm in the process of developing a website and could use some guidance. I have a specific section where I am aiming for the height to be 79.6% of the body, with the width of that div being dependent on its height. Thus far, my research has only yielded methods for adjusting height based on width. Is there anyone out there who can advise me on how to maintain an element's aspect ratio relative to its height?

Answer №1

Using this code will result in a 4:3 scaling ratio based on the height of the element. Please note that this code has not been tested, so feel free to leave a comment if you require further assistance.

var ratioX = 4;
var ratioY = 3;

var eleHeight = $('#targetElement').height();
var scale = eleHeight/ratioY;
var eleWidth = scale * ratioX;

$('#targetElement').width(eleWidth);

To ensure your image scales proportionally when the browser is resized, consider adding a resize event and wrapping the code into a function. Unfortunately, I do not have any information on CSS techniques for this specific scenario.
