Can the transition for changing the order of the model array in ng-repeat be animated using only CSS, without using ng-animate?
Absolutely, it can be done. All you have to do is manipulate the CSS class for the elements in the ng-repeat to trigger the animation.
For instance, within your ng-repeat, dynamically assign the class based on a scope variable and update this variable whenever the ng-repeat gets rearranged:
<li class="animate_slide_{{currentClass}}" data-ng-repeat="item in list | orderBy: dynamicOrder: order.reverse"><span>{{item.name}} {{$index}}</span></li>
I've modified a fiddle that demonstrates an ng-repeat orderby scenario originally created by: https://jsfiddle.net/meliax/dvgghvch/
