Can you explain the significance of 'height: 0;' in CSS coding?

I've recently come across some outdated CSS code that sets the height to height: 0; in multiple places. I'm curious about what this 0 signifies and what unit it is measured in.

If anyone could provide some insight, I would greatly appreciate it.

Answer №1

"0" does not require a unit because height:0; has the same effect as height: 0px; or height: 0%;

height:0;

The outcome varies based on the targeted element: For example:

#parentdiv{height:0;}

This only sets the height of the parent div to 0px, but it does not necessarily mean that the child div will be hidden unless overflow:hidden; is also applied. Therefore, the result depends on the element it is added to.

Answer №2

When it comes to css, the concept of height refers to the physical measurement of an element.

Essentially, setting a value of height:0px or height:0% will result in the same outcome.

To demonstrate this, let's compare two HTML elements: one with height:0; and the other with height:100px.

#box1 {
  height: 0;
  background-color: #333;
}
#box2 {
  height: 100px;
  background-color: #333;
  color: white;
}
<div id="box1" style="">this is an element</div>
<br/>
<div id="box2" style="">this is an element</div>

Answer №3

When dealing with image height

Setting 0% equals 100% :-D

img {height: 0%}
<img src="https://www.example.com/image.jpg"></img>

However, note that 0% does not equal to 0 or 0px

img {height: 0}
<img src="https://www.example.com/image.jpg"></img>

img {height: 0px}
<img src="https://www.example.com/image.jpg"></img>
