Can the text inside an <h3>
tag be displayed over an image without using <span>
and images in the background?
HTML
<h3>sample caption 1<img alt="" src="banner4.jpg" /></h3>
CSS
h3{ }
h3 img { }
Having an image tag within a heading 3 tag is not recommended.
One alternative could be:
<div>
<h3>Sample Caption 1</h3>
<img src="banner4.jpg" alt="banner" />
</div>
Then adjust the position, padding, and margin to move the text over the image, perhaps using z-index to ensure the text displays on top.
img{z-index:10;position:absolute;top:0px;left:0px;}
h3{z-index:20;}
div{position:relative;}
Alternatively, you could use a background image for the h3 element.

Unfortunately, the request you made in the question is not achievable.
Despite my attempts, I was unable to make it work.
Styling the text without an enclosing element seems impossible. I thought about using the :first-line pseudo-element, but even that didn't provide a solution as shown in this example.
However, modifying the text in your provided fiddle is a different story from what you initially asked:
