Applying CSS to Align List Items to the Left with Word Wrap

Over at my blog page qavalidation.com, I am faced with an issue related to the alignment of vertical menus with links. When word wrap is applied, there seems to be a misalignment in the left indentation. Can someone provide guidance on the correct CSS styling to achieve proper alignment?

To illustrate the problem, here is the link to the jsfiddle: https://jsfiddle.net/r7k9sueu/1/

The current output looks like:

--- Download and setup python on
windows machine

however, the desired output should be:

--- Download and setup python on
     windows machine

Answer №1

If you want to enhance your design elements, consider using a before element instead of images:

.customElement {
 position: relative;
 padding-left: 30px;
}

.customElement:before {
 position: absolute;
 content:"";
 left: 0;
 top: 0;
 background-image: url(http://example.com/image.png);
 height: 30px;
 width: 30px;
 background-repeat: no-repeat;
 background-size: cover;
}

Answer №2

<div class="dtNode"><a id="smnu25" class="node" href="http://qavalidation.com/2018/01/know-write-selenium-test-using-python.html/" title="Know how to write Selenium test using Python" onclick="javascript: mnu2.s(5);">Know how to write Selenium test using Python</a> </div>

replace the existing images with a background for the anchor tag and apply padding-left: 25px

.dtNode a {
   padding-left: 25px;
   background: url(filename) 0 0 no-repeat;
}

This code snippet is just a suggestion as you have not provided the exact code for me to work with.

Answer №3

<ul>
    <li>first item</li>
    <li>second item</li>
    <li>a really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really long item</li>
</ul>

ul {
  margin: 0;
}

li {
  list-style-type: none;
  padding-left: 20px;
  position: relative;
}
li:before {
  content: "-";
  position: absolute;
  left: 0;
}

Answer №5

To start, consider converting the div elements to li elements and eliminate any unnecessary empty gifs. Next, apply padding to each li element for a result similar to the following:

<ul>
  <li style ="padding-left: 20px;"></li>
  <li style ="padding-left: 20px;"></li>
  <li style ="padding-left: 20px;"></li>
</ul>
