Advantages of Maintaining or Disabling the CSS Outline on Websites

Have you noticed how anchors around buttons or images create a dotted outline when clicked on or in focus? I usually disable these outlines with CSS to give a cleaner look, but I've heard there can be issues for keyboard-based users. What has been your experience with the outline property? I find the dotted outlines to be unattractive, but I hesitate to disable them completely.

Answer №1

One issue is that individuals who do not use a mouse may struggle to identify which link is currently in focus.

Although I typically remove the dotted outline, it may be beneficial to incorporate distinct styles for :focus or :active states.
