Adjust the size of the image as needed in order to fit within a container of fixed

Is there a clever way to use CSS and/or JavaScript/jQuery to adjust the size of images only when necessary for them to fit within a fixed-height container alongside the remaining content? Upon reviewing the images in the 'new this week' and 'weekly specials' sections shown in the screenshot below, you'll notice what I'm referring to. In some cases, everything fits perfectly because the image is small enough and there isn't an excessive amount of text below it.

Utilizing jQuery:

$(document).ready(function() { $('div.item img').each(function() {
    var image = $(this);
    var div = $('div.item p');
    if ((image.height() + div.height()) >> $('div.item').height()) {
        while ((image.height() + div.height()) >> $('div.item').height()) {
            image.height(image.height() - 1);
        }
    }
});});

While CSS alone may not be sufficient for achieving this, jQuery can definitely help accomplish the task.

Personally, I may not have enough expertise in jQuery to provide you with a specific code solution. However, in theory, you could potentially check the combined height of child elements and compare it against the parent container's height. If the child elements exceed the fixed element's height, you could calculate the difference and adjust the image accordingly by adding a new inline height attribute or using an inline style attribute.
